And of course, there will be horses, lots of horses as well mules, donkeys, and even a llama or two.    Anyone is welcome to enter the parade and there is no entry fee. So why not get dressed up and join in the fun? If you can't enter, come on down that morning and cheer on those who do. In addition to a cowboy breakfast, there will be live music at the Main Mall. San Juan Basin Archaeological Society presentation
7:00pm / Fort Lewis Collage Lyceum
After a brief business meeting, Dr. Shelby Tisdale will her book "No Place for a Lady: The Life Story of Archaeologist Marjorie F. Lambert.". Dr Tisdale is the retired Director of the Center of SW Studies. A pre-meeting social will be held in the reception area at 6:30 p.m. Go to SJBAS.ORG for meeting information.   In the first half of the twentieth century, the canyons and mesas of the Southwest beckoned as the burgeoning field of archaeology was thriving. Among those who heeded the call, Marjorie Ferguson Lambert became one of only a handful of women who not only left their imprint on the study of southwestern archaeology and anthropology but flourished. Award-winning author, Dr. Shelby Tisdale, will take you on a thought-provoking journey into how Lambert created a successful and satisfying professional career and personal life in a place she loved (the American Southwest) while doing what she loved. Through Lambert's life story we gain new insight into the intricacies and politics involved in the development of archaeology and museums in New Mexico and the greater Southwest. We also learn about the obstacles that young women had to maneuver around in the early years of the development of southwest archaeology as a profession. Tisdale brings into focus one of the long-neglected voices of women in the intellectual history of anthropology and archaeology and highlights how gender roles played out in the past in determining the career paths of young women. Women's voices have long been absent throughout history, and Marjorie Lambert's story adds to the growing literature on feminist archaeology. Dr. Tisdale's new book No Place for a Lady: The Life Story of Marjorie F. Lambert will be available for purchase after her lecture.   Bio:   Shelby, retired Director of the Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College, has over forty years of combined experience in museum administration; anthropological, tribal museum and cultural resource management consulting; and university teaching. She is the former Director of the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture/Laboratory of Anthropology in Santa Fe, New Mexico and the Millicent Rogers Museum in Taos. She also served as the Vice President of Curatorial and Exhibitions at the Autry Museum of the American West in Los Angeles. Shelby received her Ph.D. in cultural anthropology from the University of Arizona in 1997. Her B.A. is from the University of Colorado-Boulder, where she studied anthropology and southwestern archaeology. Her M.A. is from the University of Washington, where she majored in social anthropology and museum studies. She currently calls Tucson, Arizona home.

The Polar Express Train Ride
4:30pm / Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad
Multiple excursions a day! Check our website for specific times.   Experience the magic this holiday season! Join us for a truly magical recreation of the classic holiday story, THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride. Climb aboard a vintage steam train as it departs our Durango Depot for the North Pole to pick up Santa Claus himself. Upon arriving at our depot, you'll be immersed in the story as our chefs serve you hot chocolates and sweet treats while the conductor recites a reading from the Polar Express book. After arriving at the North Pole, you'll enjoy an incredible light show set to holiday music. On the return trip to Durango, Santa will visit each coach and hand out the first gift of Christmas to each passenger. First told in the award-winning book by Chris Van Allsburg, this is the story of a child's Christmas Eve journey. It was adapted to the big screen in 2003. And now it comes alive each year with THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride! All ages can enjoy the experience, warmth, and fun of the Christmas season on a special steam train trip to the North Pole! Certain dates and car types will sell quickly so you'll want to book soon to reserve your preferred seating!   THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride is our most popular event of the year and is an annual holiday tradition for many riders. While the train excursion is roughly 65 minutes in duration, we recommend allowing 2 hours for the entire adventure so you can enjoy the full experience! The weather can be cold at the North Pole, so we recommend layering properly, even though all the cabins are heated aboard the train. As always, we recommend wearing pajamas to capture the Christmas spirit!

Downtown Balloon Glow
6:00pm / 500 Block of Main Avenue
Come to the Downtown Durango Balloon Glow (weather permitting).   Hot air balloons will light up the sky in Downtown Durango at the balloon glow in the 500 block of Main in front of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Depot.   Arrive around 6 pm to see the balloons inflate. The glow starts at approximately 6:30 pm, weather permitting. Visitors will be able to be up close to see the balloon pilots in action. Kids will love seeing all the colorful balloons! The balloons will come down around 7:30 pm, weather permitting. Schedule subject to change.   Make sure you bring your camera for the glowing balloons. There will also be "candlesticks" which are the balloon basket and burners, without the balloon. Pilots will let kids get in the basket and pull the burner, it's really cool!   Come earlier or stay after to enjoy dinner at one of the local restaurants near the event: T's Smokehouse and Grill, East by Southwest, Gazpacho's New Mexican Restaurant, Nini's Taqueria, Sizzling Siam, Cuckoos', or The Roost.    The event is weather dependent, so cross your figures for a storm and wind-free evening.   Proudly sponsored by the Durango Business Improvement District
