Improve Your Handwriting!

Want to improve your handwriting in a fun atmosphere?? You will get to apply what you learn immediately and will walk away with lettering styles that will last you a lifetime!   Adults only class.   Session 1: How To Write Like An Architect  Many architects and map makers need to write neat and quickly to accompany their designs. You will learn the attributes, variations and how to make this style your own—to be used for any occasion.   Session 2: Italic Script  Italic is not just a variation of a font, it's a hand or lettering style that was designed to be readable, to write rhythmically to support writing with speed, and the best part is that it has so many variations. We will start by using monoline tools with and without connections so you can choose if you want to write Italic as print or script. Once you know this lettering style, you can apply it as a foundation for brushlettering and more.   Session 3: Scale Up and Scale Down  Writing big can be fun! Writing small may be out of preference or necessity. We will scale our letters up and down using the right tool for the job. You will learn Thick/Thin Script to use on posters, banners or wall work. And Roman Hand at a very small scale (think .3mm) to serve as a skeleton lettering style for legibility and other lettering styles.   Each session comes with an accompanying video that you will receive at the conclusion of the course so that the learning can continue. You will also leave each session with handouts, mark making tools you get to keep, and an exemplar of your own to build from.

By the end of the evening, your piece will be ready for glazing. You will select a glaze that will be applied to your ceramic piece when fired. Big Richard is a neo-acoustic super group made up of well established Colorado musicians: Bonnie Sims on mandolin (Bonnie & Taylor Sims//Everybody Loves An Outlaw//Bonnie & the Clydes), Joy Adams on cello (Nathaniel Rateliff//Darol Anger//Half Pelican), Emma Rose on bass + guitar (Sound of Honey//Daniel Rodriguez//Whippoorwill) and Eve Panning on fiddle (Lonesome Days). At first glance, La La Bones is reminiscent of a traditional 5-piece bluegrass band, passing around breaks and harmonizing melodies. With a closer look, listeners can see how the band draws inspiration from a myriad music genres, ranging from punk, pop, to bluegrass. Listeners can also enjoy the songwriting and vocal skills of all band members, as each individual brings original music to the table. La La Bones recorded their first self-titled album in 2016, an 11-track record of originals. In 2023, the band will record their second album.La La Bones is Kyle Siesser on guitar, Tommy Frederico on banjo, Kathy Hilimire on fiddle, Scott Roberts on mandolin, and Jimi Giles Davis on bass.
Friday Night Square Dancing

The San Juan Square Dance Club dances Friday nights 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the main hall of the Durango Senior Center, 2424 Main, next to the High School. We do both Mainstream and Plus dancing with caller Richard Berry. All are welcome. No special attire required, just comfortable clothing. No smoking or Alcohol allowed. $6.00 per dancer. If you have danced in the past and just need to brush up, please join us. If you have never tried square dancing, we will be offering an 8-week series of Beginner lessons starting February 10th at 7:00 p.m.

Cascade Canyon Winter Train

Departing from the Durango Depot, this excursion takes you up into the Rocky Mountains with incredible views of the San Juan National Forest as you travel alongside the beautiful Animas River while relaxing in heated coaches. Cascade Canyon is a destination like no other and is the perfect setting for a fire-side lunch, photo opportunities or a walk along the Animas River during your 60-minute layover. Spanning 26 miles each way, this 5.25 hour round trip experience is offered on select dates from November 19 through May 5. We recommend reserving your trip in advance online so that you have the best chance of securing your preferred seating.

Bokkendo (wooden sword) and jodo (short staff) date back to medieval Japan's samurai society. Training in these ancient arts offers people in the modern world a taste of bushido, or the warrior's path to a robust spirit and unbeatable mindset. Develop greater strength, balance, coordination, and poise. Beginners are as welcome as experienced practitioners. For 20 years, DSBK has provided fun-filled training experiences open to everyone.
4Corners Riversports Red Hot Relay

Grab a costume and a couple of teammates to come out and join the fun at the Durango Nordic Center for the 4Corners Riversports Red Hot Relay!   Teams of three racers will compete for fame and glory! Each racer will complete one 3k lap. The final times will be logged when the third racer crosses the finish line. Haven't raced before? No problem! This is a great race to try out.    The cost per team for registration is $35. All proceeds benefit our youth and team programs. Register in advance on our website. Online registration closes at 7 PM on December 30. Day-of registration at the event will be available for $40.

Snowdown Flying Paper (Airplanes)

Let fly the wings of paper and page! Hosted by Durango Office Depot. A simple challenge? Make, decorate with markers, and fly your own plane paper airplane the farthest. See how far you can throw your plane within our course boundaries. All materials will be supplied by OFFICE DEPOT.    (Note: No outside materials such as premade or folded paper planes, tape, paper clips, weights, glue, attachments, plane launchers, etc are NOT permitted.) Each contestant will make/decorate/ throw their own plane.    There will be two age groups (Group-A: grades 1-6 & Group-B: grades 7-12) and both age groups will compete at the same time. 1st place prizes per group will be awarded in each age group plus prizes for contestants.    An Adult must accompany all contestants and a parent signed permission form is required for all participants. Watercolor Mountainscape Workshop with Lauren Czaplicki

In this beginner friendly watercolor class, you will combine various techniques with mindfulness. We'll begin with a short meditation practice to check in with your mental, physical, and emotional states. You'll choose colors and processes that reflect those: your internal landscape. We'll explore wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, color mixing, and color lifting techniques in this mindful watercolor class. You will receive a 5x7 practice sheet of watercolor paper to play with the various techniques and then you will create your very own internal landscape on a frameable 8x10 piece of watercolor paper!

Once learned the form can be practiced in minutes a day. Tai Chi can be adapted for those who need to stay in a chair or wheelchair. Instructor Denise Lane has been practicing Tai Chi for many years and began teaching in the 1990s.
Great Decisions discussion

Moderator Guinn Unger will present background materials and a film by the Foreign Policy Association, and lead participants in a discussion of the issues. Gather Dinner Event

The Gather Dinner event takes place every Tuesday evening 5:30pm-7:30pm Mid-October to the end of March. You are wowed with a four course, prefixed meal using as many local/regional ingredients as possible. During this culinary experience, you will be joined by two invited guests that have produced one or more of the ingredients on your plate that are going to share their journey in producing the ingredients we are privileged to serve that evening. This is a time to connect and honor our farmers, ranchers, producers, bakers and purveyors that go beyond what most of us can conceive in order to accomplish what they do. This memorable evening has limited seating. Prepaid Reservations only. Reservations are closed two days prior to event date for preparation time.

Figure drawing is the practice of drawing from a live model in different poses. It trains your eye to see things that photographs just can't capture. This makes you more perceptive in all of your work—   The biggest reason to practice with the human figure is because it has so much to offer. Yang Style Tai Chi

Originating in ancient China, tai chi is an effective exercise for health of the mind and body. Although an art with great depth of knowledge and skill, it can be easy to learn and its health benefits can soon be realized. For many, it continues as a life long journey.   Yang Style is one of the five main styles of Tai Chi and the most well known in the U.S.. In this class we will introduce and practice the basic principles that make Tai Chi so unique and beneficial. We will learn the movements of the 24 short form. This practice has been known to help improve balance, strength, coordination and flexibility.    Denise Lane is a certified Tai Chi instructor. She has been practicing Tai Chi for many years and teaching it since the late 1990's.
The Art of Painting

Express yourself through painting and develop your artistic style in this inspiring class!   Come and join Durango Arts Center each week when a variety of Painting Artists will teach special techniques through different painting mediums!   Be exposed to a variety of tips, tricks and techniques used in creating masterpieces in watercolor, acrylic, oil paints, and pastels, while working with an experienced teacher to give you guidance along the way.   Beginners are welcome! Snowdown Fashion Shall And Shall Nots

Maids and Maidens, don your kirtles, cloaks and bodices and ride your chariots to the Snowdown Fashion Do's and Don'ts! Enjoy watching the costumed lads and lasses parade down a runway to Shakespearean music and an MC. All the world's a stage and the men and women merely players. So come and play with us! Prizes for guests in costume are given out prior to the beginning of the Fashion Show in categories that can change according to the theme and judges. Prizes are usually given for most creative, best individual, best group etc. The Fairground Exhibit Hall is decorated to theme, a luncheon is included (perhaps squab or witches stew), and a cash bar with plenty of grog will be available. The event will be filmed and available for purchase as well as shown as its own event on Saturday and Sunday. No children/infants or pets allowed. This is adult entertainment! Snowdown Scavenger Hunt

Neither a borrower or a lender be. Teams of 4 shall use their wit to scour thine kingdom and county and find as many of the 100 items on the list as magically possible. Pick up list between NOON and 8 PM at the Billy Goat. All items shall fit into one City of Durango blue recycling box. The team who returns with the most items from the list to the Billy Goat by Friday at 10 AM shall be the reigning champs of the fiefdom.
