2023 Summer GOAL - Integrity and Self Confidence Through Art
9:00am / Durango Arts Center
This very special class will teach students the art of sculpture, also studying the art history of larger-than-life sculpture masterpieces, and how these artworks are created.    On Tuesday, students will learn to create fabric art.   Wednesday, illustration of a children's book, while we explore drawing, painting, and many other mediums.  Thursday we will complete our projects and present an art show to the parents and community. During this GOAL session, three guest artists will teach in their areas of expertise, sculpture, textile art, and fashion design, and also a tattooist who is an incredible illustrator! These artists will mentor the students through this process while sharing their work and lives as artists. A different lesson on leadership, integrity, and self-confidence each day by memorable community members.    GOAL offers young people, ages 11 to 17, regardless of expression or identity, the opportunity to experience art, leadership, and art-based opportunities.

Walk with your pieces through every step of creation. Together, we will focus on two modes of creating functional ware through hand building and an introduction to wheel throwing, to create functional art for everyday use. We will spend time exploring textures, shapes and colors.   Space is limited to accommodate a small student to teacher ratio. Students will rotate through time on the pottery wheels.

Literary Festival

The Durango Public Library's Literary Festival is back with a BANG! This year, we're offering a full lineup of fun and unique events celebrating all things literary! From writing workshops and Book Clubs to open mics and author events, we've got something the whole community can enjoy!    We are very proud to be hosting three incredible authors this year. Local author Andrew Gulliford will be speaking about his most recent work on Bears Ears National Monument. Colorado's own Poet Laureate, Bobby LeFebre, will be doing a poetry reading and Q&A session. And best-selling author Lisa See will be offering our keynote presentation which will include a wine and hors d'oeuvres reception.    The Lisa See event will be ticketed. National Typewriter Day is June 23 and we're using the day to celebrate the written word and our Literary Festival!   Local artist, visual practitioner, and award-winning author, Heather Martinez will have free samples of her typewritten work and will be creating small typewritten pieces on the fly!   "Typewriters have a strong history in not only the world but throughout the United States as well. Even though they might not be as popular as our trusty laptop companions, they're a fun and niche way to exercise your brain."
Lit Fest: Page One Writing Contest Reception

Come and celebrate local authors and contributors of the Page One Writing Contest! All the submissions will be on display in the library's program rooms for patrons to read and enjoy, including the five winning pages:    "Promise To Pawpa" by Amoneeta, "The Cuban Affair" by Chuck Greaves, "The Tonic of Understanding" by Emily Roley, "Zorbitt" by Paul Pennington, and "In Heaven" by Madeline Barrow.   The event is free and open to all, snack and refreshments will be provided.   The Contest, which was held last November garnered over 100 entries from local authors. The authors, who represented a variety of ages, genders, cultures, and experiences submitted a multitude of genres including poetry, fantasy, memoir, and historical fiction. The winning pages were read aloud on the Page One Radio Program throughout the month of January.   The Page One program continues to air on KSUT Mondays 9:30 a.m. & Saturdays 7:56 a.m. and KDUR Fridays 11:45 a.m. & Sundays 10:30 a.m. Tune in to hear more about the wonderful books offered by the Durango Public Library!

Its recognition will be a relevant topic for years to come.    Andrew Gulliford is professor of history at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. Sixty Dealers from across the U.S. will sell extraordinary rocks, gems, minerals crystals, fossils, meteorites, geodes, shells, and beads from around the world, as well as jewelry, equipment, tools, findings and MORE!   A wide range of classes are offered in Lapidary and Metalsmith techniques.   Fun and free activities for the kids, such as gold panning and treasure hunts.   Delicious food and beverage service too! The event features large indoor and outdoor exhibition areas; indoor venues are air-conditioned.   Adults $3 per day. Children under 12 admitted free with an adult.

K-28 100th Anniversary Fall Photography Special

In commemoration of our cherished K-28 locomotives turning 100-years old, the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is pleased to offer a very rare and unique opportunity to experience an excursion from Durango to Silverton for an overnight and return powered by two Alco K-28s. The helper will be cut in mid-train, recreating a look and train operating scenario that harkens back to earlier decades on the Denver & Rio Grande Western.    The Silverton Train with mid train helper will operate October 16th and 17th. The two-day experience will offer the northbound mid-train helper with numerous run by opportunities to photograph and video this historical recreation. The consist will include a caboose, three coaches, gondola, concession car, and eight freight cars with livery backdated to a mid-1950s Denver and Rio Grande Western look.   Day One (October 16th): The 14-car consist will navigate the Animas Canyon for a 10-hour excursion to Silverton with plenty of locations to photograph the train from along the right of way. After a late afternoon arrival in Silverton, Durango's own and well-known author Jerry Day will give a presentation about the history of the K-28 locomotives during a special cocktail hour held at the Grand Imperial hotel. Complimentary appetizers will be served, and alcohol will be available for purchase. An organized night photo shoot will not be held in Silverton, however guests are welcome to capture images of the locomotives and consist at the Silverton depot on their own accord throughout the evening.   Day Two (October 17th): For the southbound return trip back to Durango, our K-28s will power two separate trains, one freight and one passenger, for the return trip to Durango. Again, there will be ample photo run by opportunities offered throughout the day.   A box lunch for each guest is included for both days of the excursion.   Overnight accommodations are NOT included in the price, however a block of rooms is available on a first come, first served basis at the Grand Imperial Hotel in Silverton at a 15% discounted price. Free and open to the public, this self guided, monthly event will take place rain or shine, the First Friday of every month throughout Durango with a focus on main street from north to south!   Businesses of any and all kinds open their doors and their walls to host an artist of their choice and follow a "reception" format- artist info, beverages and/or snacks provided, maybe even a musician- while locals and tourists alike flood the area to socialize, shop, eat, and celebrate the arts in all forms.   Join us every month!

Get into the spirit of the season with the Festival of Trees & Wreaths, a free and family friendly holiday tradition! Event-goers will tour an enchanted forest of Christmas trees and wreaths decorated by our generous sponsors, bid on the creative gifts and festive decorations, and vote for their favorite creations - all while supporting Community Connections' mission to help people with disabilities lead healthy and fulfilling lives in Southwest Colorado.   View a dazzling display of trees and wreaths in person at the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum from December 1st - 12th, from noon to 5 pm.
The ArtRoom Collective First Friday Art Crawl

Come talk with local artists, be inspired by creative work, or buy a local, handcrafted item for yourself or a special someone to celebrate Spring! The Smiley Cafe will be open for a warm beverage, glass of wine or a treat, and live music will accompany the evening.   The ArtRoom Collective at The Smiley is a diverse, working studio gallery where artists create, collaborate and share their passion with the community. See creation in action! The ArtRoom Collective is Durango's working studio gallery where 22 artists, jewelers, potters, leather crafters and others create and sell their handmade goods. Monthly First Friday Art Crawls at The ArtRoom Collective feature artist spotlights with demonstrations to teach and inspire.
