Media Literacy in the Age of Information, Misinformation and Disinformation

Join the League of Women Voters and Fort Lewis College on Thursday, February 22 from 4:30-6:00pm at the Durango Public Library for a lively discussion on Media Literacy in an Age of Information, Misinformation and Disinformation.    The event features Dr. Justin McBrayer, Professor of Philosophy and author of Beyond Fake News, Dr. Michele Malach, Professor of English and Media Literacy expert, and Dr. Erich Reisen, Visiting Professor, and specialist in the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence.    The panel will bring their perspectives, answer audience questions, and provide attendees with more tools to deal with news fatigue and an improved ability to access and analyze media messages.   The event is free and advance registration is not required. Can you believe it? iAM MUSIC is celebrating 10 years as a 501c3 non-profit organization as of 2023! We are asking our donors & community to join us at Eolus for a uniquely elegant soiree, including sushi, incredible entree selections, libations, good company, and live music at Eolus on February 22nd, 2024. Join the iAM MUSIC Founders, Board of Directors & Staff, and select students! We have so much history and exciting news to share with our donors and community! Evening at Eolus is a benefit for iAM MUSIC, and students will share stories, we will showcase live performances, our gratitude, and an official growth plan for 2024 and our vision forward. All donations from this event will be directly invested in iAM MUSIC program expansion, at-no-cost-to-student Outreach programming, free instrument rentals, production & recording space, and, as well as new platforms to connect and inspire young musicians. Southwest Handmade and April's Garden are officially celebrating their grand opening/ re-opening from 5:15 - 7:30PM    Southwest Handmade has been serving our community since 2017, specializing in custom heirloom furniture and built-ins.    April's garden has been serving our community since 1884, specializing in floral arrangements and gifts for your life time events and celebrations.    Come celebrate the opening of our new showroom and retail space with us!   Join both of our businesses for a celebration of new beginnings, in our new shared space. We will kick off the night with a ribbon cutting ceremony with the Chamber of Commerce, followed by snacks and refreshments. Everyone is welcome to attend this free event. We hope to see you there!

DHS PTO Winter Gala & Silent Auction

We invite you to join us for our Winter Wonderland Gala at the Powerhouse Museum. There will be entertainment, food and drinks, and a fabulous silent auction. We can't do what we do without your generosity and support. Durango dressy/cocktail attire is encouraged.    The Durango High School Parent Teacher Organization's mission is to support the teachers, staff, and students in their journey to becoming the top performing public school in Colorado. We are committed to enriching the educational and social experiences for the students of DHS, as well as fostering a positive work culture for the staff. We will promote and encourage communication between parents, teachers, and school administration to work collaboratively. The PTO will organize fundraising efforts that will focus on supplemental classroom supplies, teacher appreciation and student-led organizations/activities to enhance a feeling of school and community spirit.

Presentation by Steve Allen: 'Fifty Years in the Canyons'
7:00pm / Center of Southwest Studies Lyceum
Historian and explorer Steve Allen will discuss his many years investigating the canyon country of Southern Utah, addressing his family's history of desert exploration, his interest in documenting history on the ground, and his thoughts about the ongoing battles over land protection in Utah.   Steve is a widely recognized expert on the human history of the canyon lands of Southern Utah. His popular 'Canyoneering' series of hiking guides is considered a "go-to" source for accurate information.
