Author Event & Book Signing: Anne Hillerman "The Way of the Bear"
6:00pm / Maria's Bookshop
Fossil harvesting, ancient lore, greed, rejected love and murder combine in this gripping new installment of New York Times bestselling author Anne Hillerman's Leaphorn, Chee & Manuelito series.   An unexpected death on a lonely road outside of Utah's Bears Ears National Park raises questions for Navajo Tribal Police officers Jim Chee and Bernadette Manuelito. Why would a seasoned outdoorsman and well-known paleontologist freeze to death within walking distance of his car? A second death brings more turmoil. Who is the unidentified man killed during a home invasion where nothing seems to have been taken? Why was he murdered?   The Bears Ears area, at the edge of the Navajo Nation, is celebrated for its abundance of early human habitation sites and the discovery of unique fossils which revolutionized the scientific view of how early animals dealt with their changing world. For Chee and Bernie, the area glows with geological interest and spiritual insight. But their visit to this achingly beautiful place is disrupted by a current of unprecedented violence that sweeps them both into danger.   An illicit business, a fossilized jaw bone, hints of witchcraft, and a mysterious disappearance during a blizzard and to the peril. It will take all of Manuelito's and Chee's experience, skill, and intuition to navigate the threats that arise beneath the twin buttes that give Bears Ears its name and to see justice served.   ANNE HILLERMAN is the bestselling author of the Leaphorn, Chee & Manuelito series. The Sacred Bridge is her seventh novel in the series, which was created by her father, Tony Hillerman. She lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she is at work on her next novel.

The High Hawks featuring Vince Herman (Leftover Salmon), Tim Carbone (Railroad Earth) Chad Staehly (Hard Working Americans),
8:00pm / Animas City Theatre
Animas City Theatre PresentsThe High Hawks featuring Vince Herman (Leftover Salmon), Tim Carbone (Railroad Earth) Chad Staehly (Hard Working Americans), Adam Greuel (Horseshoes & Hand Grenades), Brian Adams (DeadPhish Orchestra) and Will Trask (Great American Taxi)  21+ / $30   The word supergroup gets overused to describe side musical projects, but it's apt and well-earned when it comes to The High Hawks. With nearly 150 years of collective touring and playing between them, Vince Herman (Leftover Salmon), Tim Carbone (Railroad Earth, Blue Sparks From Hell), Chad Staehly (Hard Working Americans), Adam Greuel (Horseshoes & Hand Grenades), Brian Adams (DeadPhish Orchestra) and Will Trask (Great American Taxi) have maintained a generation-spanning presence at the forefront of the roots music scene for over two decades   But talk to the band members, and you'll find that their reasons for getting together were much more down to earth.   "Sometimes you meet somebody and you hit it off, and you feel like, 'Man, I don't want to just look at the cover, I want to read that book,'" says guitarist Adam Greuel with a laugh. "It's a tight-knit music community in our Americana-bluegrass-jam band world. Over the years, we all kept bumping into one another and realizing there was a deep sense of fellowship and kindred spirit. The main impetus to form The High Hawks was really a curiosity about one another, both musically and personally. This band came out of a yearning to hang out."   "And the reason I think it worked so well is that we'd known each other for so long," agrees multi-instrumentalist fiddler Tim Carbone. "I've sat in with Adam's band. I produced two Great American Taxi records. I've worked with Chad in super creative situations. I've known the guys in Leftover Salmon for over twenty years. It's one big happy family. It's kind of the perfect situation. You have a group of guys who know and love each other. And oh yeah, by the way, we get to play these cool original songs too."   But two years ago, when they first convened at guitarist-singer Vince Herman's house in the Rockies, there was no clear road map for where they might go. Greuel says, "We had a run of shows booked in Colorado, and we didn't know what kind of music we were really going to make. Everybody brought a few song ideas along. It was two days before our first show, and that's when a lot of the songs came together and our whole vibe as a band came together. We have shared influences, shared musical vocabulary, but even with that, there was a kind of telepathy that was like, 'Holy moly, not only should we be playing some shows, but let's cut a record too!'"

Fear not, fellow gardeners, drip irrigation is here to save you (and your water)!   This event will be held at the Durango Public Library and is hosted by the Durango Botanic Gardens as part of their Great Garden Series. You can view the entire series here - https://www.durangobotanicgardens.org/Events

San Juan Basin Archaeological Society meeting and presentation
7:00pm / Fort Lewis Collage Lyceum
The San Juan Basin Archaeological Society invites the public to a presentation in the Lyceum at the Center of Southwest Studies and on Zoom on Wednesday, May 10th at 7:00 pm. At 6:30 we will have social time, then after a brief business meeting, Mona Charles will discuss, "From This Earth: Ancestral Pueblo Pottery in the Animas Museum's Collection". For log-in information, go to SJBAS.ORG.    The Four Corners region of the American Southwest, including La Plata County is well known as a home of the Ancestral Pueblo peoples. Starting in the 1930s, local avocational archaeologists attracted the attention of professionals with the quantity and quality of the artifacts they excavated. Many of these artifacts made their way into much larger institutions, however a relatively small collection was donated to the Animas Museum. In 2016, Museum staff completed a NAGPRA Consultation and Documentation grant. Human remains, along with associated and unassociated funerary objects were identified and subsequently claimed by the Hopi tribe. However, many artifacts in our collection are not associated with burials and lack extensive data. During the summer of 2022, the Animas Museum received a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences to properly identify, catalog, and care for these artifacts and make them accessible to the public, both in person and online. In this presentation, team members Mona Charles, Susan Jones, Briana Paxton and Patty Joy will talk about the project which will conclude this summer. susanjones@animasmuseum.org   Presenters:   Mona Charles is an anthropological archaeologist with over three decades of experience in the Four Corners, most of this time in Southwest Colorado. Ms. Charles has worked for various Municipal, State, and Federal agencies, Fort Lewis College, the La Plata County Historical Society, and many private consulting firms. Mona is probably best known for her work with the Basketmaker II sites of Darkmold and the Falls Creek Rock Shelters.   Patty Joy is a local fiber artist and quilt historian who has had experience working with arche-ologists in the field and in museums.   Briana Paxton is a local artist and museum conservator.   Susan Jones is currently the Collections Manager at the Animas Museum.

Durango Botanic Garden - Farmington Nature Hike
9:00am / Trail from Mesa Verde Middle School
This is a hike down in Farmington in the wilderness area around San Juan College and Pinon Hills Golf course. We would cover 4.5 to 5 miles of dirt trail, no great big elevation challenges, but some hills. I think it would take about 3 to 3.5 hrs., max, with a maximum of 10 participants. We could meet at Mesa Verde Middle School parking area at 9am. Participants should bring plenty of water and snacks, if desired. Some years the sago lilies, penstemon, cacti, yucca and scorpion weed are spectacular, other years, not so great, depending on moisture received - it's always different each spring. Pluses are that there are no great crowds, so parking is not an issue, and it is not terribly strenuous.

Quick & Dirty Downtown Walking Tour
10:00am / Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Depot
For those seeking the highlight reel of Durango’s early history, beginning in 1881, through the lens of the Historic Downtown Durango District (Main Avenue). This is a must-do for locals to learn where actual notorious Wild West events happened (as opposed to the lore) to share with your guests. Both tourists and locals alike will walk away with a very different view of Durango and a deeper appreciation.   Buffalo soldiers, Native Americans, outlaws, Chinese restaurateurs, railroad works and miners, freed slaves, and "soiled doves" were amongst the melting pot that was Durango. Sometimes things went awry and all hell broke loose. As a result, you will visit the hanging sites and location of the epic gunfight between the Sheriff and the Marshall amongst others.    This tour meets at the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Depot (479 Main Avenue; gather at the horse sculptures out front). Please note this is a one-way walk up Main Avenue. We will end at Maria's Bookstore (960 Main Avenue). On this approximately 1 hour and 15 minute tour we will not enter establishments. This makes it an option for those with disabilities (be prepared for uneven Durango sidewalks however) and well behaved dogs (please give advance notice). After the tour you will be right on time for lunch at any of our wonderful downtown restaurants; now with a newfound appreciation of Durango.    Please do not attend a tour if you are experiencing Covid symptoms.

Reverend Horton Heat & Delta Bombers
7:00pm / Animas City Theatre
$35/$40/21+   Tickets on sale online Friday October 21st   Loaded .38s, space heaters, and big skies. Welcome to the lethal, littered landscape of Jim Heath's imagination. True to his high evangelical calling, Jim is a Revelator, both revealing and reinterpreting the country-blues-rock roots of American music. He's a time-travelling space-cowboy on an endless interstellar musical tour, and we are all the richer and "psychobillier" for getting to tag along.   REVEREND HORTON HEAT have been the outlet of this creative mind for 29 years, leading to 10 full-length albums, 3 "best-of" collections, 2 DVD releases and thousands of memorable live performances. Never reaching platinum status or having a #1 radio single hasn?t been a problem for the Rev either, the band has continually been a mainstay of late night television and has toured with legendary acts such as Johnny Cash, Motorhead, Marilyn Manson, The Ramones, and many more, all of whom hold the Rev in the highest regard, as a true music industry legend.   Now, entered into a fresh new partnership with Victory Records, REVEREND HORTON HEAT show no signs of slowing down in 2014. January 21st marks the release of their 11th studio album, appropriately titled REV. The album marks a much lauded return to riff-laden, out-of-control rock 'n roll that fans fell in love with when they first heard "Psychobilly Freakout". The album's first single has already turned heads; "Let Me Teach You How to Eat" is REVEREND HORTON HEAT at its finest: tongue-in-cheek and so catchy, it won't leave your head for weeks.   The band has an incredible tour history and, with major shows and tours already booked throughout the year, will make sure you get the chance to dance one more time! Jim Heath and Jimbo Wallace have chewed up more road than the Google Maps drivers. For twenty-five psycho(billy) years, they have blazed an indelible, unforgettable, and meteoric trail across the globe with their unique blend of musical virtuosity, legendary showmanship, and mythic imagery.   "REVEREND HORTON HEAT, he's great and plays the music he believes in and nothing else. Go see him or I'll kill you!!" Lemmy Kilmister (MOTORHEAD)   Rev your engines and catch the sermon on the road as it's preached by everybody's favorite Reverend. REV is out January 21st.

Quick & Dirty Downtown Walking Tour

Hauntings & History Ghost Tour
7:30pm / Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Depot
Downtown Durango is saturated with paranormal activity. You don’t need to walk far to get your fill of ghost stories. Main Avenue was once home to a plethora of saloons, dance halls, brothels, and gambling halls. It was the stomping ground for outlaws, gamblers, prostitutes, miners, and railroad workers. Late night escapades, fueled by whiskey, led to many tragic events resulting in the ghosts that wander the streets today.   Our 90-minute Hauntings & History Ghost Tour will not disappoint. We will meet in front of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Train Depot (479 Main Ave) at dusk. Midway through the tour we will enter one of the best haunted locations that Downtown Durango has to offer! We are the only ghost tour that takes people INSIDE of a location! Wherever we tread on Main Avenue you will hear tales of apparitions who refuse to leave the places they inhabited in life. Because of the tight sidewalks downtown our tours do not exceed 15 people.    Be prepared for loud streets and crowds. Downtown Durango can be pretty raucous at night.

Hauntings & History Ghost Tour

Glass Fusion With Nancy Byers

The techniques are easy and fun to learn. Create an original art piece, window hanging, garden stake, or wind chimes in a few hours of your own design or from samples and inspiration provided. Then the magic happens when the piece is fired in the kiln where it all melts together.
