Coffee Connections: Your Health is Your Business
8:00am / Durango Chamber of Commerce
If we do not make time in the short term for our self-care, which is our most effective and empowering form of health care, the long-term cost is dysfunction and disease. Leaders often stop taking care of themselves when life gets overwhelming; self-care is seen as a nice to have and NOT a necessity. The reality is we will wait until we are sick or injured to act on our self-care, which comes at a huge emotional and physical cost.    In her talk, Dr. T will:    1. Uncover your health blinds spots,    2. Discuss your role in your health,   3. Show how to assess where you are on your health journey so you can get to where you need to go.   4. Share what the 5 key health behaviors are and how to stay consistent across those health behaviors for your short- and long-term benefit.   Your health is your greatest form of wealth. Let this talk help you not only get back on track with your health yet give you a framework on how to optimize your self-care health care for the long term.    Dr. Theresa is an author or WARRIOR, dynamic speaker, a former Marine Corps Engineer Officer turned Doctor of Physical Therapist (yet does not practice traditional PT), Founder of Movement Rx a health and wellness company that delivers LIVE and digital trainings, retreats, and health programs to organizations. Finally and most importantly, Theresa is a healthy human BEing, wife, and mother of two little boys.   Our monthly learning series explores a wide range of topics, industries, and organizations, all presented and highlighted by chamber members. The FLC Percussion Ensemble will begin with Casey Cangelosi's Metavita, performed by a trio of musicians in complete darkness, and each member performs on one snare drum with a pair of wire brushes and two small LED lights. This unique composition portrays a drama of creation, life, growth, and death, with the LED lights representing fictional life forms. They begin, multiply, interact, and end. Additional compositions include Brian Nozny's Atmos Clock, which features three performers on one marimba, Perpetuo by Thomas R. Marceau, and Brian Blume's exciting quartet, Black Racer. Following the FLC Percussion Ensemble, the FLC Jazz Combo will close the performance with a variety of jazz compositions!   Free Admission

A Different Way to Understand Community: A Closer Look at the Velarde Valley of New Mexico   The Velarde Valley of the Northern Rio Grande, New Mexico, has received only limited attention from researchers. The area is known to have been home to several Classic Period Tewa communities, some of which were inhabited right up to the time of Juan de Onate' settlement of San Gabriel in A.D. 1598. The area is also dense with historic and modern settlements which have a long history of irrigation agriculture along the Rio Grande.    Based on ethnographic studies of recent Pueblo communities, archaeologists have typically presumed that Classic Period settlements represent socially and politically independent communities. However, careful attention to the traditional knowledge manifest in these village sites suggests that they shared a culturally based perspective of the surrounding regional landscape and viewshed. This paper builds from these observations in suggesting that these settlements represent a larger interconnected community. This view offers a new perspective on how we might interpret other clusters of pueblo village sites. I focus on Indigenous ontological perspectives of community that give us a different way of understanding settlement clusters.    Patrick Cruz, is a PhD archaeology student with the University of Colorado, and the Curator of Collections at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe, NM. He is also a member of Ohkay Owingeh, a Tewa speaking Pueblo community in northern New Mexico. His interests are in the pre-contact American Southwest, particularly in the events that led up to the abandonment of the Four Corners region at the end of the 13th century as well as its consequences for the northern Rio Grande region of New Mexico. His other interests include Puebloan agriculture and hunting strategies, migrations, landscape archaeology, phenomenology, Indigenous archaeology, historic linguistics, and on Tewa language preservation. Patrick is also a traditional Tewa potter as well as having interests in the study of Pueblo ceramics and pottery traditions.   Patrick gained his BA in cultural anthropology from Fort Lewis College in Durango, and his MA from the University of Colorado in archaeology. In addition, he has twenty years of combined experience in the fields of archaeology and museums including work at the Center of Southwest Studies, Bandelier National Monument, the New Mexico History Museum, and the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture.
