Author Talk & Book Signing: Shelley Read 'Go As A River'
6:00pm / Maria's Bookshop
Join us as author Shelley Read shares from her debut novel, "Go As A River".   Set amid the beauty and wilderness of the Colorado mountains, an unforgettable and deeply moving story of a young woman who follows her heart. Seventeen-year-old Victoria Nash runs the household on her family's peach farm in the small ranch town of Iola, Colorado--the sole surviving female in a family of troubled men. Wilson Moon is a young drifter with a mysterious past, displaced from his tribal land but determined to live as he chooses. Victoria encounters Wil by chance on a street corner, profoundly altering both of their young lives, unknowingly igniting as much passion as danger. When tragedy strikes, Victoria leaves the only life she has ever known, fleeing into the nearby mountains. Taking shelter in a small hut, she struggles to survive in the wilderness, with no clear notion of what her future will bring. As the seasons change, she also charts the changes in herself, finding in the natural world the strength and meaning that sets her on a quest to regain all that she has lost, even as the Gunnison River rises to submerge her homeland--its ranches, farms, and the beloved peach orchard that has been in her family for generations. Inspired by true events surrounding the destruction of the town of Iola in the 1960s, Go as a River is a story of deeply held love in the midst of hardship and loss, but also of finding courage, resilience, friendship, and, finally, home--where least expected. This stunning debut explores what it means to lead your life as if it were a river--gathering and flowing, finding a way forward even when a river is dammed.   Shelley Read is a fifth generation Coloradoan who lives with her family in the Elk Mountains of the Western Slope. She was a Senior Lecturer at Western Colorado University for nearly three decades, where she taught writing, literature, environmental studies, and Honors, and was a founder of the Environment & Sustainability major and a support program for first-generation and at-risk students. Shelley holds degrees in writing and literary studies from the University of Denver and Temple University's Graduate Program in Creative Writing. She is a regular contributor to Crested Butte Magazine and Gunnison Valley Journal, and has written for the Denver Post and a variety of publications.

Human Resources Workshop: Leverage Culture to Recruit & Retain Top Talent
11:30am / Center for Innovation
Join us for a three-part Human Resources Workshop in partnership with the Durango Chamber and the Durango Area Human Resources Managers. The first workshop on Leveraging Culture to Recruit & Retain Top Talent will be taught by Suzanne Phare with Real Ideal Coaching at the Center for Innovation (second floor of the Main Mall).   Workshop Description:  The world of work is changing. What used to work doesn't. Based on evidence from one of the largest studies conducted related to resignation and culture, this session will help you understand the key drivers of retention and recruitment (spoiler alert, we aren't talking about ping pong tables and pet insurance). Culture is quantifiable, and you will leave understanding 5 key aspects of culture that will make or break your attraction and preservation of high-performing and engaged employees.   Suzanne has over twenty years of executive coaching and human resource management and owns Real Ideal Coaching. She is the former HR Director at Ska Brewing and is currently conducting Leadership Training and Executive Coaching in the Four Corners Area.   Since this workshop takes place over the lunch hour, please feel free to bring your own lunch to enjoy.   All are welcome to attend these workshops to learn more about important topics that impact your business! Mark your calendar for the other workshop dates: Thursday, June 8th, and Thursday, November 9th.
