MASTER CLASS – MATT ALBERT - Free Lecture

See our Conservatory Director Matt Albert in an interactive lesson as he instructs the Conservatory Orchestra students through pieces for their upcoming performances. Master Classes help strengthen students’ ability as the master gives them advice on how to play selections, gives demonstrations and corrects technique. Master classes provide artistic stimulation for both the performer and the audience. Spectators welcome!

MATT ALBERT, Conservatory Director, violin & viola
Called “preposterously talented” by Time Out Chicago, violinist and violist Matt Albert is the new Chair of Chamber Music at the School of Music, Theater & Dance at the University of Michigan. In his previous position as Director of Chamber Music and SYZYGY at the Meadows School of the Arts, Southern Methodist University, he mentored a series of young chamber ensembles including the Altius Quartet, the Cézanne Quartet, and Brazen Brass 5 to recognition from the Aspen Music Festival and School, the Coltman Chamber Music Competition, and the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. He was a founding member of eighth blackbird, with whom he received numerous awards, including first prizes at the Naumburg, Concert Artists Guild, Coleman, and Fischoff Competitions, and three Grammy awards for their recordings on Cedille Records. During the summer he serves as the Artistic Director of the Music in the Mountains Conservatory in Durango, Colorado. He has collaborated with artists as diverse as Meredith Monk, Corky Siegel’s Chamber Blues, and Wilco, and his orchestral playing has included work with the Shreveport Symphony (as concertmaster), the Baltimore Symphony, the Florida Orchestra, the Firebird Chamber Orchestra, and the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra. His principal teachers include Kenneth Sarch, Gregory Fulkerson, Kurt Sassmannshaus, and Almita Vamos. Matt holds degrees from Oberlin College and Conservatory, the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and Northwestern University School of Music.
