DESCRIPTION
This course will introduce the fundamentals of the Chinese medical approach to health and disease. Students will learn the Four Primary Pillars of Health in Chinese medicine, development of abnormal functions and chronic disease, and symptoms as an expression of abnormal physiology over time. Chinese medical assessment, diagnosis, and the role of traditional treatments and how they influence health in the human body will be taught. The role of Chinese medicine in treating the “root cause” of health problems will be emphasized. For educational purposes, students will learn how Eastern and Western medical models differ, and discussion about the unification of the two medical models will be a part of the class presentation. Traditional lecture and powerpoint presentation may be utilized, with white board pictorals providing visual references to clarify concepts. This class will be of interest to students who want to understand more about the history, development, and practice of Chinese medicine as a viable medical model. It is appropriate for patients or potential patients of a TCM provider who would like to understand more about the therapies they are engaged in. This may also be of interest to the curious public that wants to learn what if any validity Chinese medicine has for the modern, increasingly high tech world. The class will be actively and passively promoted through various outreach and educational systems of WAOM, social media, active patients, and email marketing. A revolving class may be offered as a strong recommendation for new patients, or as an introduction for potential new patients who want more substantial information before participation as a patient.
