The Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College continues its summer lecture series based on the theme, “A Year in the Life of the West.” The presentation, "1848: The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo" will feature guest speaker Craig Nettleton on Wednesday, July 13th at 1:30 p.m. in the Center’s Lyceum Room #120. In his presentation "1848: The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo," Nettleton will examine Manifest Destiny, American imperialism, the Mexican-American War and Nicholas Trist’s role in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The Treaty, its use by land speculators, and the impact from the American court system, had profound effects on the land grants of New Mexico and Colorado. This gave rise to strong reactions, even violence, to opposing definitions of property. Craig Nettleton is a retired psychologist and educator. He is the author of the novel, "Rocks in my Bed." This lecture is the result of the background research for his next book. This lecture is free to the public. Parking on campus is free during summer months.
