The Center of Southwest Studies and the Native American Center will host a Navajo weaving demonstration and talk in the Center’s museum gallery on Thursday, November 9th in honor of Native American Heritage Week at Fort Lewis College.
At 12:00 pm, Zefren Anderson will give a talk on the history of Navajo weaving titled,†A New Perspective on Navajo Weaving and Traditional Insights.†From 1:00-4:00 pm, Anderson, along with Aretta Begay and Kevin Aspaas, will demonstrate the weaving of a Navajo “striped†blanket. The public is welcome to come and go, as the demo is ongoing.
The Navajo Rug Weaving Demonstration is made possible by Diné be’ iiná, Inc., a grassroots, nonprofit organization founded in 1991. Diné be’ iiná, means the way that we, the people live. They seek to preserve, protect, and promote the Navajo way of life; to encourage the participation and cooperation of the Navajo people among themselves and with other people and organizations; and to engage in research, education, development, establishment and promotion of projects and activities which further these ends.
This event is free to the public. Parking permits are required before 5 pm on campus during the academic semesters.
