Fifty years behind a fret board, two Grammys, and any blues style at his fingertips have made Taj Mahal the go-to guitarist for the Rolling Stones, Etta James, Eric Clapton, and Ali Farka Touré. With the Taj Mahal Trio, Mahal offers his own distinctive brand of music, layering Caribbean, Hawaiian, African, Latin and Cuban sounds and rhythms with folk, jazz, zydeco, gospel, rock, pop, soul and R&B – all on top of a solid roots/blues foundation.
A self-taught musician, Mahal plays more than 20 instruments, including the National Steel and Dobro guitars. His remarkable voice ranges from gruff and gravelly to smooth and sultry, but he reminds: “I just play to the goddess of music – and I know she’s dancing.â€
