“Equal Means Equalâ€, a film documenting the status of state ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) and of CEDAW, will be shown on May 18 at the Durango Public Library at 6:30 pm, doors open at 6:00, sponsored by INDIVISIBLE DURANGO, the Women’s Rights Committee. CEDAW refers to the UN Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Discrimination Against Women. The showing is open to the public, free of charge. Donations to defray the cost of room rental are welcome.
The film focuses on ten areas of discrimination, including the law; pregnancy and wage discrimination; domestic violence; foster care and child sex trafficking; female poverty and incarceration; and rape and sexual assault. “Equal Means Equal†was directed and, and is narrated by, Kamala Lopez. The film brought many viewers to tears at a recent, limited INDIVISIBLE showing. Therefore, the Women’s Rights Committee decided that this powerful film deserved a broader audience.
