Topic: Incubating the next farmers at the old Fort
Lewis and Montezuma School to Farm Project
Speakers: Beth LaShell and Sarah Severson
Beth LaShell will describe her role as Coordinator of the Old Fort at Hesperus (formerly the San Juan Basin Research Center). Her duties include day-to-day operations, coordinating Fort Lewis College and community uses, working with FLC students interested in sustainable agriculture, and serving as project director for research projects including Analyzing Hops Varieties for High Altitude Production, Alternative Marketing Schemes, and the Old Fort Market Garden Incubator.
While farming her own homestead in the Mancos Valley, Sarah Severson directs the Montezuma School to Farm Project. She loves mixing local food, farmers, and kids together on a regular basis. Montezuma County's rich agricultural heritage has been a shoe-in for the local food movement, and their students are connecting with old timers to build some incredible legacies. Sarah will give you the nuts and bolts of the Montezuma School to Farm Project's successes, integrating local food into curriculums and cafeterias on an on-going basis with incredible results.
