In the wake of Gubaidulina's passing this past March, Dr. Quist reflects on the composer's pioneering spirit during the oppressive Soviet era. The program will feature Gubaidulina’s Chaconne, Ustvolskaya's intense Piano Sonata No. 6, and the spiritually charged complete Piano Sonata by Gubaidulina. Audience members will experience the metaphor for censorship in Gubaidulina’s Toccata – Troncata, and the conclusion of the poignant and lyrical expression of Firsova's For Alissa. This event invites attendees to consider how these composers' radical acts of defiance resonate with contemporary struggles, offering inspiration and courage through their music.
