DESCRIPTION
Something special is happening in Portland, Oregon these days. As many communities rely on global companies to grow their economy, Portland is relying on do-it-yourself artisan businesses to provide jobs for its growing population. From Portland State University, Durango welcomes special guest Charles Heying, Associate Professor of Urban Studies and Planning, to share lessons from his research on rise of Portland’s ethic of handmade wealth. His recent book, Brew to Bikes: Portland's Artisan Economy, profiles bike manufacturers, specialty restaurants and food carts, microbreweries, clothing designers, maker groups, re-use and recycling hubs, and more. Learn how to strengthen the artisan movement in Durango and the Four Corners region and create jobs that allow for the passion, integrity, and creativity of our residents to shine through. Features a special presentation and a panel discussion with local artisans to discuss the particular opportunities and challenges that artisans face in our region.
