DESCRIPTION
The artisan economy is active in southwest Colorado thanks to a growing handful of pioneers who have started businesses making beer and bicycles and baked goods, unique furniture, ice cream, outdoor gear, and flavorful chocolates. The event Handmade Wealth will celebrate these pioneers and spark discussion about how we can strengthen this sector of our economy. Nationally, Portland, Oregon is a leader in the artisan economy movement with the label “Portland-made” acquiring distinction across the country. What can Durango learn from Portland’s burgeoning artisan scene? From Portland State University, Durango welcomes special guest Charles Heying, Associate Professor of Urban Studies and Planning, to share lessons from his research on rise of Portland’s ethic of handmade wealth. His recent book, Brew to Bikes: Portland's Artisan Economy, profiles bike manufacturers, specialty restaurants and food carts, microbreweries, clothing designers, maker groups, re-use and recycling hubs, and more.
