Food for Change tells the little-known story of the cooperative movement in the United States from the Great Depression to the present. The film examines the key role played by food co-ops during the decades-long debate between monopoly capitalism and locally-controlled businesses.
Today, food co-ops across the country are experiencing a resurgence in response to the widening wealth disparity and the consolidation of the food industry. Filmmaker Steve Alves describes his documentary as “one part food, to two parts politics, to three parts economics.â€
