Robert Ryan’s hard-boiled New York cop Jim Wilson in this taut, rapid-paced manhunt. The chase leads him to rural upstate in the pursuit of a killer who just happens to have sister with the missing pieces to the puzzle of Jim’s personal redemption. Directed by Nicholas Ray and co-starring Ida Lupino, and Ward Bond, it features a haunting musical score by Bernard Herrmann.
