Freedom from the Inner Critic
6:00pm / register in advance
Thursdays | 6 sessions | 6:00 - 8:30 | Jan 11 - Feb 15 For more information or to register, contact Julia Dengel - please put "Inner Critic" in subject line. $200 for the series with sliding scale.   Join Diamond Approach teacher Julia Dengel for an in-depth exploration of the Inner Critic, that inner voice that judges us, compares us to others, and constrains our capacity for joy and freedom to be ourselves. Through teachings and experiential exercises, we will investigate the origins and function of the Inner Critic, and will learn strategies to reclaim our capacity to be who we are in our depth and power.    Appropriate for insight-oriented adults (young and old) who have felt stymied by their own negative commentary and long for more inner freedom to live fully and authentically. Please commit to attend all six sessions as teachings are cumulative. Let's talk if you need to miss one.   The Diamond Approach is a body of teachings that invites more openness, freedom, and realization of our human potential. The main practice is open-ended inquiry into one's direct experience with curiosity and allowing - which leads to more intimacy with oneself and understanding of one's psychological patterning. These two threads can then unfold, leading to more contact with one's unconditioned, essential nature through understanding the intricacies of one's own conditioning based on personal history.   Philosopher Ken Wilber recommends the Diamond Approach as "the most balanced of the widely available spiritual psychologies/therapies."

The talk is titled "How Lucy lived, and died, and why it matters.". For log-in information go to SJBAS.ORG.    Brief abstract: "Lucy," a 3.2-million-year-old specimen of Australopithecus afarensis that was discovered in Ethiopia, is arguably the most famous fossil on planet Earth. She has been at the center of a nearly 50 year long debate about whether early hominins were exclusively biped, or also spent time in the trees. In this lecture, I will present our studies that aim to resolve the debate about how she lived, and also discuss intriguing data that point to how she died.   John Kappelman was born and raised on a small family farm in southwestern Idaho. He received a B.S. in Geology and Geophysics from Yale University, and an M.A. in Anthropology and Ph.D. in Anthropology and Earth and Planetary Sciences, both from Harvard University. He recently retired after serving for 35 years as a professor in the Departments of Anthropology and Earth and Planetary Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin, and continues his association with UT Austin as Professor Emeritus. The primary focus of his research is ape and human origins and evolution, with particular emphasis in paleoecology and functional morphology, and stratigraphy and geochronology. He conducts field and laboratory research in paleontology, stratigraphy, and paleomagnetism, and laboratory research in functional morphology and computer imaging. He has worked all around the world, and runs current field projects in Kenya and Ethiopia. He and his lab members have built many web sites including eSkeletons, eLucy, eFossils, and eAnthro Labs. For the past 20 years, he split his time between Austin and Pagosa Springs, and now resides full time at the Frying Pan Lazy K ranch outside of Pagosa Springs. He has visited Dawn Mulhern's classes several times.

Author Event & Book Signing: Ben Goldfarb Crossings: 'How Road Ecology is Shaping the Future of Our Planet'
6:00pm / Maria's Bookshop
Durango-based freelance writer Krista Langlois will moderate a discussion with conservation journalist and author Ben Goldfarb.   A New York Times Notable Book of 2023 and Editors' Choice • A Science News Favorite Book of 2023 • A Kirkus Reviews Best Nonfiction Book of 2023 • A Smithsonian Staff Favorite of 2023 • A New Yorker Best Books of 2023 So Far • Named a Fall 2023 Must-Read by Outside, Sierra, and the Boston Globe.   An eye-opening account of the global ecological transformations wrought by roads, from the award-winning author of Eager.   Some 40 million miles of roadways encircle the earth, yet we tend to regard them only as infrastructure for human convenience. While roads are so ubiquitous they're practically invisible to us, wild animals experience them as entirely alien forces of death and disruption. In Crossings, environmental journalist Ben Goldfarb travels throughout the United States and around the world to investigate how roads have transformed our planet. A million animals are killed by cars each day in the U.S. alone, but as the new science of road ecology shows, the harms of highways extend far beyond roadkill. Creatures from antelope to salmon are losing their ability to migrate in search of food and mates; invasive plants hitch rides in tire treads; road salt contaminates lakes and rivers; and the very noise of traffic chases songbirds from vast swaths of habitat.   Yet road ecologists are also seeking to blunt the destruction through innovative solutions. Goldfarb meets with conservationists building bridges for California's mountain lions and tunnels for English toads, engineers deconstructing the labyrinth of logging roads that web national forests, animal rehabbers caring for Tasmania's car-orphaned wallabies, and community organizers working to undo the havoc highways have wreaked upon American cities.   Today, as our planet's road network continues to grow exponentially, the science of road ecology has become increasingly vital. Written with passion and curiosity, Crossings is a sweeping, spirited, and timely investigation into how humans have altered the natural world—and how we can create a better future for all living beings.
