The ArtRoom Collective First Friday with Bindu
4:00pm / Smiley Building / ArtRoom Collective
Art Talks with Bindu Bammi Hughes Art Talks is an introduction to the great artists and various art movements. How they created and have inspired and awed us through history. What was their motivation, what pushed them to be creative? Bindu offers Art Talks the third Thursday of each month at Create Art & Tea, and she’ll be giving her talk on Women Artists of the Southwest this First Friday, June 7 at 5:30pm at The ArtRoom Collective. Please join us! Bindu has spent years in the field of international education, broadening her horizons and making a positive impact on the lives of young learners. This path took her to various countries, including the Philippines and Indonesia, where she had the privilege of working as an educator and connecting with diverse communities. Through teaching, she discovered the transformative power of art and its ability to foster self-expression, cross-cultural understanding, and personal growth. Her journey has taken her from the picturesque tea plantations of India to the vibrant world of international education, eventually leading her to the charming city of Durango, where she has found her home. Growing up in India, amidst the lush greenery and captivating landscapes of the tea plantations, she developed a deep appreciation for nature's beauty and an innate sense of creativity. Driven by her passion for art and its potential to heal and inspire, she pursued further studies in art therapy, equipping herself with the knowledge and skills to guide others on their own creative journeys. As an artist, art educator, and art therapist, she has been fortunate to witness the transformative effects of art in the lives of individuals and communities, helping them find solace, self-discovery, and empowerment. In Durango, Bindu has found a place to call home, where she has established her studio at the Smiley Building—a space that nurtures her artistic spirit and allows her to create and explore freely. It is within these walls that she embarks on her own creative journey, experimenting with various mediums, techniques, and concepts, and translating her experiences and emotions into visual expressions. The ArtRoom Collective at The Smiley is a diverse, working studio gallery where 23 artists, jewelers, potters, hat makers and others create, display and sell their handmade goods. Creating, collaborating and sharing their passion with the community. For more information, go to www.theartroomcollective.com

Solstice Project file 'Written on the Landscape'
7:00pm / Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College
The Colorado premiere of Anna Sofaer's third Solstice Project film, "Written on the Landscape: Mysteries Beyond Chaco Canyon," will be free and open to the public.    The showing, sponsored by the San Juan Basin Archeological Society, the Fort Lewis College Center of Southwest Studies and the FLC Concert Hall, will be introduced by the renowned Southwest writer Craig Childs. The film's national premiere will be on New Mexico PBS on June 20,2024., the summer solstice, at 7:00 pm.    "Written on the Landscape" illustrates the Solstice Project's ground-breaking research that shows the immense region of the Chaco World, using aerial imagery, precise surveying techniques and LIDAR (aerial laser scanning). Insights come from Puebloan advisors combined with new understandings of Mesoamerican parallels for cardinal directions, the interplay of vertical and horizontal axes, ritual roads, cacao, shells, spirals and the sun and the moon. The film also serves as a call to protect this ancient resource from degradation of the landscape from energy extraction and disregard of the environment.   The film follows the exploration by Anna Sofaer, Director of the Solstice Project, of the Chaco Canyon world of magnificent architecture that flourished 1000 years ago across 70,000 square miles of the American Southwest. This third film in Sofaer's Chaco Canyon trilogy, the prior two also shown on PBS, blends stories from indigenous and non-indigenous scholars to tell the story of an ancient culture with relevance for our contemporary society—both cultures, in the words of Petuuche Gilbert from Acoma Pueblo, having the choice between the good and the bad, between power used with wisdom and power capable of destroying the world.    The Solstice Project (SP) studies the astronomical heritage of the discovery of the Sun Dagger site on Fajada Butte in Chaco Canyon. The SP continues to research, publish, and present its findings on the achievements of the Chaco people, how they envisioned an order of cosmology through monumental buildings, non-utilitarian roads, and rigorous geometries. The SP has created a 3-D interactive model of three Sun Dagger site demonstrating in real time how three rock slabs cast light patterns that mark the solar and lunar cycles on the spiral rock carvings. The model shows what the eye cannot readily see: how the sun and the moon operate on the features carved into the landscape.   Anna Sofaer, president and founder of the Solstice Project is an American researcher and educator on the archeoastronomy of the Ancestral Puebloans of the American Southwest and other ancient cultures. In 1977, she "rediscovered" the astronomical marker site known as the Sun Dagger on Fajada Butte in Chaco Culture National Historic Park, which records the solar and lunar cycles.

This makes you more perceptive in all of your work—The biggest reason to practice with live animals is because it has so much to offer. Mastering the animal form is about more than just shapes and muscles and bones.   A $10 Tip or Chew Toy is Required for our models and will go directly to the LaPlata County Humane Society. Author Event & Book Signing with Kevin Fedarko
6:00pm / Durango Public Library
From the author of the beloved bestseller The Emerald Mile comes a rollicking and poignant account of the epic misadventure of two friends, zero preparation, and one dream: a 750-mile odyssey, on foot, through the heart of America's most magnificent national park and the grandest wilderness on earth.   A few years after quitting his job to follow an ill-advised dream of becoming a guide on the Colorado River, Kevin Fedarko was approached by his best friend, the National Geographic photographer Pete McBride, with a vision as bold as it was harebrained. Together, they would embark on an end-to-end traverse of the Grand Canyon, a journey that, McBride promised, would be "a walk in the park." Against his better judgment, Fedarko agreed to the scheme, unaware that the small cluster of experts who had completed the crossing billed it as "the toughest hike in the world."   The ensuing ordeal, which lasted more than a year, revealed a place that was deeper, richer, and far more complex than anything the two men had imagined—and came within a hair's breadth of killing them both. They struggled to make their way through the all but impenetrable reaches of its truest wilderness, a vertical labyrinth of thousand-foot cliffs and crumbling ledges where water is measured out by the teaspoon and every step is fraught with peril—and where, even today, there is still no trail along the length of the country's best-known and most iconic park.   Along the way, veteran long-distance hikers ushered them into secret pockets, invisible to the millions of tourists gathered on the rim, where only a handful of humans have ever laid eyes. Members of the canyon's eleven Native American tribes brought them face-to-face with layers of history that forced them to reconsider myths at the center of our national parks—and exposed them to the impinging threats of commercial tourism. Even Fedarko's dying father, who had first pointed him toward the canyon more than forty years earlier but had never set foot there himself, opened him to a new way of seeing the landscape.   And always, there was the great gorge itself: austere and unforgiving but suffused with magic, drenched in wonder, and redeemed by its own transcendent beauty.   A Walk in the Park is a singular portrait of a sublime place, and a deeply moving plea for the preservation of America's greatest natural treasure.

We've been in continuous operation running trains on this 45-mile branch of the original Denver & Rio Grande Railway since 1882. Much of the scenery remains unchanged since those historic days. Soak in the views, listen as the steam whistle echoes through the canyon, hear the vintage locomotive work to pull the train up the grades. If you long to unwind and enjoy Colorado nature at its finest, this is the trip for you.   More About This Excursion  Departing from the Durango Depot, this unforgettable trip takes you up into the Rocky Mountains with views of the San Juan National Forest as you travel alongside the beautiful Animas River on your way to the historic mining town of Silverton.   There will be up to two steam departures depending on the date. Piedra River Geology Hike - Pagosa
9:00am / Piedra River trailhead
Join San Juan Mountains Association and San Juan National Forest on an interpretive hike to learn more about the geology of the Pagosa District area. These hikes, led and presented by geologist Dave Bouquett, will be in an area of the San Juan National Forest rich with evidence of earth's geologic history from some of the area's oldest metamorphic rocks, to Cretaceous seaways, to Tertiary volcanoes, to modern glacial deposits.   This Canyon Rocks! - Piedra River Trail  One of the most popular hiking trails in the Pagosa area for families and experienced hikers alike, threads through a great mix of river canyon, meadows, and forest. Shortly after leaving the parking area, the trail drops moderately into a beautiful, narrow sandstone canyon through which the Piedra River cascades over rocks and boulders in its path. The shady cool of the tree-covered canyon is a welcome relief on a hot summer day. Rocks and boulders cover much of the path so sure footing and appropriate footwear are a must. The bottom of the canyon then opens into a serene riparian meadow through which the trail meanders. Approximately 2.9 miles from the trailhead is the second of two steel pedestrian bridges on this hike, this one crossing the Piedra River. Nearby some of the oldest rock in the area is found. Though the trail continues, this will be our planned turn-around point as we return back up the same canyon trail we descended. Hike time is approximately 4 hours total, 6 miles round trip, and a 600 ft. vertical ascent round trip. We will stop for approximately ½ hour along the trail to eat, so pack your own lunch.

Bayfield Death Cafe
1:00pm / Pine River Library Community Room
Pine River Library is one of many groups in 79 countries across the world that host Death Cafés. A Death Cafe is a time and place where people come to share food, drink tea or coffee, and discuss death openly and honestly. The aim is to increase awareness about death in order to help people make the most of their (finite) lives. There is never an intention of leading participants to any conclusion, product or course of action. A Death Café is not a bereavement support or grief counseling setting, nor is it a place to give people information about death and dying. It is not for people who, for whatever reason, are unwilling to discuss the subject of death comfortably and openly. Interesting conversations are guaranteed! These events are facilitated by Lola Montano, a registered nurse who is pursuing her hospice certification and is interested in becoming a death doula.    Join us every third Tuesday of the month from 1-2:30 pm.

Growing up in India, amidst the lush greenery and captivating landscapes of the tea plantations, I developed a deep appreciation for nature's beauty and an innate sense of creativity. After completing my education, I ventured into the field of international education, seeking to broaden my horizons and make a positive impact on the lives of young learners. This path took me to various countries, including the Philippines and Indonesia, where I had the privilege of working as an educator and connecting with diverse communities. Through teaching, I discovered the transformative power of art and its ability to foster self-expression, cross-cultural understanding, and personal growth.   Driven by my passion for art and its potential to heal and inspire, I pursued further studies in art therapy, equipping myself with the knowledge and skills to guide others on their own creative journeys. As an artist, art educator, and art therapist, I have been fortunate to witness the transformative effects of art in the lives of individuals and communities, helping them find solace, self-discovery, and empowerment. In Durango, I found a place to call home, where I have established my studio at the Smiley Building—a space that nurtures my artistic spirit and allows me to create and explore freely. It is within these walls that I embark on my own creative journey, experimenting with various mediums, techniques, and concepts, and translating my experiences and emotions into visual expressions.   Volunteering in the community has been an integral part of my life, providing me with a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Through my involvement, I have had the privilege of connecting with like-minded individuals, forming lifelong friendships, and contributing to the well-being of the community that has embraced me.

Starting to sing at sixteen and picking up the guitar at twenty, Timbo draws inspiration from greats like Bill Withers, James Taylor, and Tim Miner. His music blends vintage soul, gospel, folk, R&B, and modern blues, creating a distinctive style often dubbed "transparent soul." Currently, Timbo is actively touring to promote his latest music, having recently completed a successful stint with Grammy-winning bassist Marcus Miller at Blue Note New York. He plans to continue touring with Miller and The Black Opry and perform at notable summer festivals like the American Roots Festival and Newport Folk Festival.   Picnics, blankets, and lawn chairs are encouraged and Fired Up Pizzeria and Grassburger will offer a selection of food and beverages throughout the evening.

Play Reading: All That Remains
7:00pm / Durango Arts Center

GA-20
8:00pm / Animas City Theatre
GA-20 with Special Guest TBA  $30 / $35 / 21+  Doors 7:00pm / Show 8:00pm   GA-20 clearly is on to something big. It's a movement, a new traditional blues revival. The dynamic, throwback blues trio are disciples of the place where traditional blues, country and rock 'n' roll intersect. "We make records that we would want to listen to," says guitarist Matt Stubbs. "It's our take on the song-based traditional electric blues we love." Stubbs, guitarist/vocalist Pat Faherty, and drummer Tim Carman have been at the forefront of this traditional blues revival since they first formed in 2018. It's no wonder they skyrocketed to the top of the Billboard Blues Chart.   According to Stubbs, "Since we started the band we've focused on the story, the melody, and on creating a mood. Playing live as much as we do, we're finding more and more that people are discovering how cool it all is. Traditional country, soul and funk music have all had these massive recent revivals, but traditional blues so far has not." With their new Colemine album, Crackdown, and an intensive tour schedule, that's all about to change.   On Crackdown, GA-20's third full-length release, the band creates an unvarnished, ramshackle blues that is at once traditional and refreshingly modern. Expanding on their previous releases (2019's Lonely Soul and 2021's Try It…You Might Like It! GA-20 Does Hound Dog Taylor) GA-20 finds inspiration on the edges of the genre, where early electric blues first converged with country and rock 'n' roll. The album's nine original songs include the loping, Louisiana-flavored Dry Run, the dirty, and bare-bones Easy On The Eyes and the melodic, garage-tinged Fairweather Friend. With tight, propulsive performances and a brevity and punk energy reminiscent of The Ramones, Crackdown is rowdy and fun, filled with instantly memorable, and well-crafted songs.   Standing Room only - Limited First Come First Serve Seating in balcony.   Please Bring your I.D. to claim your tickets at Will Call, even if you selected print at home tickets. Two Sets  $40 / $45 / 21+ No Exceptions  Doors 7:00pm / Show 8:00pm   270 capacity venue  Tickets only available online at http://www.animascitytheatre.com Andy Frasco & The U.N. have long been the high-flying DIY renegades of the touring scene known and loved for their kaleidoscopic musical fusion and one-of-a-kind onstage audacity. Now celebrating their longevity, the band is shaking things up with L'Optimist (Fun Machine Records/Soundly), as its title suggests, Frasco's most hopeful and enthusiastic collection thus far. A testament to Frasco's wide-ranging influences and boundless energy, his band's sixth released studio album sees the magnetic frontman continuing to chart his path of self-exploration and personal discovery through increasingly introspective lyricism and musical adventure. Songs like "Everything Bagel (Feat. Artikal Sound System)" and the deeply moving "Iowa Moon" touch on matters of the heart and mental health, emotional struggle and the sheer vulnerability of the human experience, all relayed through a wildly eclectic approach navigating funk, jazz, surf rock, blues, swing, gospel, reggae, exotica, and more with horn-blasted positivity and soulful power.   "I fight depression every single day," Frasco says, "and the only way to fight depression is through optimism. I try to write optimistic songs because optimism keeps me going. As humans, I don't think we're all that much different. Everyone needs a little optimism to keep going."   Having spent the first part of his career making his bones as a fun-loving frontman with a self-proclaimed "gift of gab," Frasco pushed his songwriting in more personal directions with 2020's Keep On Keepin' On and 2022's Wash, Rinse, Repeat.   Website: http://andyfrasco.com  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AndyFrascoBand/  Instagram: @andyfrasco  Twitter: @andyfrasco
