Open August 1 - 14th   It's still summer, but it's time to think about getting your fall-planted bulbs SOON. The Durango Botanic Gardens 12th annual Bulb Sale will once again be conducted online. 48 types of bulbs will be available to order. The Bulb Sale preview opens on July 24 on the Botanic Gardens' website: www.durangobotanicgardens.org. You will find pictures and descriptions of all the available bulbs to help you plan your garden.    Paid orders will be available for pickup mid-October at a variety of locations and times that will be posted on the website. October is the ideal time to plant your daffodils, tulips, Dutch iris, hyacinth, crocus, and other spring beauties! This steam train excursion is perfect for families with young children, late risers, or anyone looking to experience the historic D&SNGRR with only five hours to spare.    The Cascade Canyon Express departs from Durango and travels deep into the San Juan National Forest about halfway to Silverton, before returning to Durango for a 5-hour highlight reel of spectacular Rocky Mountain and Animas River Canyon scenery.   The Cascade Canyon Express has a concession car with a variety of snacks and drinks available for purchase. Pre-order boxed lunches are also available.   The train will depart from the Durango Depot at 9:45 AM every day and return to Durango at 3 PM from May 26th - May 29th and June 7th - August 13th.

This is a must-do for locals to learn where actual notorious Wild West events happened (as opposed to the lore) to share with your guests. Both tourists and locals alike will walk away with a very different view of Durango and a deeper appreciation.   Buffalo soldiers, Native Americans, outlaws, Chinese restaurateurs, railroad works and miners, freed slaves, and "soiled doves" were amongst the melting pot that was Durango. Sometimes things went awry and all hell broke loose. As a result, you will visit the hanging sites and location of the epic gunfight between the Sheriff and the Marshall amongst others.    This tour meets at the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Depot (479 Main Avenue; gather at the horse sculptures out front). Please note this is a one-way walk up Main Avenue. We will end at Maria's Bookstore (960 Main Avenue). On this approximately 1 hour and 15 minute tour we will not enter establishments. This makes it an option for those with disabilities (be prepared for uneven Durango sidewalks however) and well behaved dogs (please give advance notice). After the tour you will be right on time for lunch at any of our wonderful downtown restaurants; now with a newfound appreciation of Durango.    Please do not attend a tour if you are experiencing Covid symptoms.

The Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College and Alpine Bank present the free summer concert series, "Concert Hall @ The Park" in downtown Durango's Buckley Park featuring Frontera Bugalú!   Frontera Bugalu brings the sounds of "cumbia rebajada", a style created by slowing down vintage Colombian cumbia records on turntables, started in Monterrey, NL Mexico and spread to the entire northern Mexican and US/southwest region including El Paso, Tx and Cd. Juarez, where the band is based. The band has developed their own unique cumbia style and a contagious live set, lead by a button accordion that sonically travels from region to region and lyrics that narrate the stories of latinos in the US and across Latin America. They have shared the stage with many from the latin music scene such as Son Rompe Pera, La Santa Cecilia, Los Lobos, Yeison Landero, and Celo Piña, among many others and have become a favorite in the southwest and along the border.   Picnics, blankets, and lawn chairs are encouraged with Fired Up Pizzeria offering a selection of food and beverages throughout the evening.

They play 75-80 shows a year at venues throughout southwest Colorado and northern New Mexico, and are often joined at the larger venues by backing musicians to play as a trio or full band. Their sound blends Nina's velvety smooth vocals and acoustic rhythm guitar with Larry's melodic and passionate electric lead guitar work, and covers a wide range of rock, blues, jazz and country.    All Concerts are FREE! Our trivia consists of four rounds of questions and always includes one scientific round and a music round. $5 suggested team donations. Midway through the tour we will enter one of the best haunted locations that Downtown Durango has to offer! We are the only ghost tour that takes people INSIDE of a location! Wherever we tread on Main Avenue you will hear tales of apparitions who refuse to leave the places they inhabited in life. Because of the tight sidewalks downtown our tours do not exceed 15 people.    Be prepared for loud streets and crowds. Downtown Durango can be pretty raucous at night.

Departing from the Durango Depot, this trip takes you up into the Rocky Mountains with views of the San Juan National Forest as you travel alongside the beautiful Animas River on your way to the historic mining town of Silverton. There will be one Silverton Diesel Train departing daily at 8:15 AM from May 20th - August 13th.

There will be up to three steam departures depending on the date. The Silverton Steam Train departs daily at 9:00AM 5/6/23-10/28/23, 8:15AM 8/14/23-10/14/23, and 9:45AM 9/1/23-10/14/23

Experience the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad's iconic canyon views along the Highline on our shortest excursion offered. This steam train excursion is perfect for families with young children, late risers, or anyone looking to experience the historic D&SNGRR with only five hours to spare.    The Cascade Canyon Express departs from Durango and travels deep into the San Juan National Forest about halfway to Silverton, before returning to Durango for a 5-hour highlight reel of spectacular Rocky Mountain and Animas River Canyon scenery.   The Cascade Canyon Express has a concession car with a variety of snacks and drinks available for purchase. Pre-order boxed lunches are also available.   The train will depart from the Durango Depot at 9:45 AM every day and return to Durango at 3 PM from May 26th - May 29th and June 7th - August 13th.

For those seeking the highlight reel of Durango’s early history, beginning in 1881, through the lens of the Historic Downtown Durango District (Main Avenue). This is a must-do for locals to learn where actual notorious Wild West events happened (as opposed to the lore) to share with your guests. Both tourists and locals alike will walk away with a very different view of Durango and a deeper appreciation.   Buffalo soldiers, Native Americans, outlaws, Chinese restaurateurs, railroad works and miners, freed slaves, and "soiled doves" were amongst the melting pot that was Durango. Sometimes things went awry and all hell broke loose. As a result, you will visit the hanging sites and location of the epic gunfight between the Sheriff and the Marshall amongst others.    This tour meets at the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Depot (479 Main Avenue; gather at the horse sculptures out front). Please note this is a one-way walk up Main Avenue. We will end at Maria's Bookstore (960 Main Avenue). On this approximately 1 hour and 15 minute tour we will not enter establishments. This makes it an option for those with disabilities (be prepared for uneven Durango sidewalks however) and well behaved dogs (please give advance notice). After the tour you will be right on time for lunch at any of our wonderful downtown restaurants; now with a newfound appreciation of Durango.    Please do not attend a tour if you are experiencing Covid symptoms. 

Join San Juan Mountains Association staff and volunteers for an interpretive naturalist hike! Learn about wildflowers, ecology, wildlife, geology, and cultural history in our beautiful San Juan Mountains.   The fun, fact-filled nature hike is moderate, We'll be moving at a "walking" pace for around 1-2 miles. Wear walking shoes and clothing layers suitable for the mountain weather.   FREE, but registration is required.

Join Blue Rain Gallery for Durango's First Friday Artwalk featuring a painting demo by Eunika Rogers.    Artist Statement  My work is rooted in nature and the female body. I search for ways to explore how each changes with time, often focusing on a spiritual and physical connection with the land. I use nature as my inspiration for both; the medium and the process - I paint with clay.    As time passes by, images in the landscape gradually change. This change uncovers layers, stripping it one at a time until one if left with pure emotion. I record a fraction of these images in my photographs, capturing a moment in time, and then using clay and other organic matter, I 'fossilize' these images in my paintings.   The Earth takes all living things, I resurrect them in my paintings, using clay and pigments from the Earth, in their raw, unfiltered form. It is a primitive process, and a primitive medium, one that was used by a primitive man in cave paintings of Altimira or Lascaux. To paint with clay is to deposit it, layer by layer on the painting surface. Time changes things but my paintings stay constant.

At our market you have the opportunity to meet face to face with the producers and learn more about their growing methods. The San Juan Basin Archaeological Society invites the public to a presentation in the Lyceum at the Center of Southwest Studies and on Zoom on Wednesday, August 9th at 7:00 pm. At 6:30 we will have social time, then after a brief business meeting, Jacque Kocer will discuss her research on the Gallina culture, a community that thrived in northern New Mexico from about 1100 to 1300 A.D. For log-in information, go to SJBAS.ORG. The title of Ms Kocer's talk is "Intricate Simplicity: The Enduring Beauty of Gallina Ceramic Designs". The Gallina (1100-1300 A.D) area in northern New Mexico was home to a culturally distinct group of people that thrived in the highlands, inhabiting small villages and dispersed residential units. The Gallina area is about 70 km northeast of Chaco and their architecture consists of unit houses, pit houses, towers and cliff dwellings. Their material culture has some similarities to the rest of the Ancestral Puebloan world, including black-on-grey ceramics, but they also produced cooking vessels with conical bases, tri-notched axes, elbow pipes and knives that are uniquely Gallina. The way potters choose to decorate their ceramic containers can reflect important symbols related to different facets of group identity including a group's social or political identity. Other low visibility attributes (like design execution) are indicative of a shared background of learning in a community of practice. This presentation compares the motif and surface treatments styles on both decorated and utility wares at four sites across the Gallina area. Jacqueline Kocer is an enrolled member of the Oglala Lakota and she has mixed Indigenous and Spanish Ancestry from Northern New Mexico. She is currently a PhD Candidate at the University of New Mexico. Her dissertation research involves the study of cultural identity through ceramic production practices on Gallina decorated and utility wares. Her passion for archaeology comes from her responsibility to her ancestors, to connect with and protect cultural material and sacred places. Kocer is the CEO of the Gallina Research Institute for Indigenous Technology (GRIIT) with the mission to collaborate with Indigenous communities and to provide career pathways in archaeology for Native students. GRIIT is currently con-ducting survey of sites in the Chama River Canyon Wilderness area under a Forest Service permit.

In the stunning foothills of southwestern Colorado, second-stage small businesses and other local entrepreneurs will gather to learn how to shift out of their startup phase and into what's next.   The Southern Ute Tribe and the University of Colorado Boulder Leeds School of Business Deming Center for Entrepreneurship partner to host this program as an ongoing effort to promote economic development in Ignacio, La Plata County, and the overall region. This year's workshop will be taught by Erick Mueller and Erick Bruno, entrepreneurs and award-winning professors at the Leeds School of Business. The StartUp to ScaleUp course will give existing small businesses and entrepreneurs in all stages the opportunity to examine their businesses, learn growth and marketing strategies, and explore scaleup finance and funding to get their businesses to the next level.

The Durango Farmers Market is a venue for local agriculturalists, ranchers and artisans to meet and share their harvest and talents with the Durango community. At our market you have the opportunity to meet face to face with the producers and learn more about their growing methods. Vendors post their farming practices at their booth and most follow organic growing methods.   Our market also offers hot ready to eat food from local vendors, value added foods such as jams, jellies and sauces and local artisans who make high-quality handcrafted items. For those seeking the highlight reel of Durango’s early history, beginning in 1881, through the lens of the Historic Downtown Durango District (Main Avenue). This is a must-do for locals to learn where actual notorious Wild West events happened (as opposed to the lore) to share with your guests. Both tourists and locals alike will walk away with a very different view of Durango and a deeper appreciation.   Buffalo soldiers, Native Americans, outlaws, Chinese restaurateurs, railroad works and miners, freed slaves, and "soiled doves" were amongst the melting pot that was Durango. Sometimes things went awry and all hell broke loose. As a result, you will visit the hanging sites and location of the epic gunfight between the Sheriff and the Marshall amongst others.    This tour meets at the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Depot (479 Main Avenue; gather at the horse sculptures out front). Please note this is a one-way walk up Main Avenue. We will end at Maria's Bookstore (960 Main Avenue). On this approximately 1 hour and 15 minute tour we will not enter establishments. This makes it an option for those with disabilities (be prepared for uneven Durango sidewalks however) and well behaved dogs (please give advance notice). After the tour you will be right on time for lunch at any of our wonderful downtown restaurants; now with a newfound appreciation of Durango.    Please do not attend a tour if you are experiencing Covid symptoms.

The West Slope Westies (a 501c3) present an all-dance social under the gazebo!   The event will include Salsa, Rhumba, Two-Step, Swing, Cha-cha, Tango, and Fox Trot dances.

Our 4-H & FFA families would like to invite YOU to fill the bleachers on a warm summer day during La Plata County Fair week and cheer on the kids who...practice with a 1200-pound steer that doesn't always want to walk, a 140-pound lamb that doesn't want to get on the stand for the 100th time, a 280-pound hog that just wants to stay in the cool barn or a stubborn goat that doesn't like the chain.    Please come check out the Exhibit Hall for all the non-livestock exhibitors, too! Experience the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad's iconic canyon views along the Highline on our shortest excursion offered. This steam train excursion is perfect for families with young children, late risers, or anyone looking to experience the historic D&SNGRR with only five hours to spare.    The Cascade Canyon Express departs from Durango and travels deep into the San Juan National Forest about halfway to Silverton, before returning to Durango for a 5-hour highlight reel of spectacular Rocky Mountain and Animas River Canyon scenery.   The Cascade Canyon Express has a concession car with a variety of snacks and drinks available for purchase. Pre-order boxed lunches are also available.   The train will depart from the Durango Depot at 9:45 AM every day and return to Durango at 3 PM from May 26th - May 29th and June 7th - August 13th.

The Durango Botanic Gardens 12th annual Bulb Sale will once again be conducted online. 48 types of bulbs will be available to order. The Bulb Sale preview opens on July 24 on the Botanic Gardens' website: www.durangobotanicgardens.org. You will find pictures and descriptions of all the available bulbs to help you plan your garden.    Paid orders will be available for pickup mid-October at a variety of locations and times that will be posted on the website. Every Monday: 8:15 am to 9:15 am   The regular practice of Tai Chi has many benefits including improved balance, strength, flexibility, stress reduction and improved overall health and well-being. As a result, you will visit the hanging sites and location of the epic gunfight between the Sheriff and the Marshall amongst others.    This tour meets at the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Depot (479 Main Avenue; gather at the horse sculptures out front). Please note this is a one-way walk up Main Avenue. We will end at Maria's Bookstore (960 Main Avenue). On this approximately 1 hour and 15 minute tour we will not enter establishments. Downtown Durango is saturated with paranormal activity. You don’t need to walk far to get your fill of ghost stories. Main Avenue was once home to a plethora of saloons, dance halls, brothels, and gambling halls. It was the stomping ground for outlaws, gamblers, prostitutes, miners, and railroad workers. Late night escapades, fueled by whiskey, led to many tragic events resulting in the ghosts that wander the streets today.   Our 90-minute Hauntings & History Ghost Tour will not disappoint. We will meet in front of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Train Depot (479 Main Ave) at dusk. Midway through the tour we will enter one of the best haunted locations that Downtown Durango has to offer! We are the only ghost tour that takes people INSIDE of a location! Wherever we tread on Main Avenue you will hear tales of apparitions who refuse to leave the places they inhabited in life. Because of the tight sidewalks downtown our tours do not exceed 15 people.    Be prepared for loud streets and crowds. Downtown Durango can be pretty raucous at night.

Join us for live music at James Ranch Grill with Smelter Mountain Boys   Radioactive bluegrass from Durango, CO Smelter Mountain Boys have become known in the Four Corners area for traditional bluegrass with tight instrumentation and high vocal harmonies since their founding in 2018. It’s a bit of North Carolina meets Colorado with Corey Clark bringing an extensive catalog of bluegrass favorites and standards he learned in bluegrass’ birthplace. He’s backed up by some Colorado boys that have grown up around the campground and festivals and jam circles of the Rocky Mountains; Steve Labowskie on bass and vocals, Pete Donahue on mandolin and vocals who also well known in Durango’s punk rock scene and Eli Emmitt on lead guitar. Eli’s flatpicking skills were honed while learning the “family business” of Colorado style bluegrass and jamgrass (the last name might be familiar), he is also a jazz guitar student at Fort Lewis College.

Both tourists and locals alike will walk away with a very different view of Durango and a deeper appreciation.   Buffalo soldiers, Native Americans, outlaws, Chinese restaurateurs, railroad works and miners, freed slaves, and "soiled doves" were amongst the melting pot that was Durango. Sometimes things went awry and all hell broke loose. As a result, you will visit the hanging sites and location of the epic gunfight between the Sheriff and the Marshall amongst others.    This tour meets at the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Depot (479 Main Avenue; gather at the horse sculptures out front). Please note this is a one-way walk up Main Avenue. We will end at Maria's Bookstore (960 Main Avenue). On this approximately 1 hour and 15 minute tour we will not enter establishments. This makes it an option for those with disabilities (be prepared for uneven Durango sidewalks however) and well behaved dogs (please give advance notice). The Durango Farmers Market is a venue for local agriculturalists, ranchers and artisans to meet and share their harvest and talents with the Durango community. At our market you have the opportunity to meet face to face with the producers and learn more about their growing methods. Vendors post their farming practices at their booth and most follow organic growing methods.   Our market also offers hot ready to eat food from local vendors, value added foods such as jams, jellies and sauces and local artisans who make high-quality handcrafted items. All vendors must produce their goods within our five-county radius ensuring fresh produce and locally made goods. We also have live music performances each weekend as well as community information booths for non-profits and groups that promote our market values of local, sustainable and healthy living.

For a truly unforgettable step back in time, enjoy a leisurely trip to yesteryear riding 3 1/2 hours each way on this train while spending a nearly 2-hour layover in the historic mining town of Silverton to enjoy the sights, shopping, food, and libations that Silverton offers. Departing from the Durango Depot, this trip takes you up into the Rocky Mountains with views of the San Juan National Forest as you travel alongside the beautiful Animas River on your way to the historic mining town of Silverton. There will be up to three steam departures depending on the date. The Silverton Steam Train departs daily at 9:00AM 5/6/23-10/28/23, 8:15AM 8/14/23-10/14/23, and 9:45AM 9/1/23-10/14/23

CSU Extension, along with Manna Gardens, is excited to once again host the Tour de Farms bike ride, which we started about 16 years ago! The TdF highlights what is unique, healthy and homegrown in the La Plata County community.    You may want to arrive a bit early - 8:30am - to check-in, get your bike ready, and catch up with friends.   All riders must be registered.   Cost of the ride is $25 for adults and $20 for riders 12 and younger (kids on the back of bikes and carriers are free, just let us know there may be an extra mouth to feed).   All participants are welcome at the after-party, held at Manna (1100 Avenida Del Sol) where you can feast on Zia Taqueria and Ska Beer. All riders will also receive a swag bag and a commemorative pint glass!

For those seeking the highlight reel of Durango’s early history, beginning in 1881, through the lens of the Historic Downtown Durango District (Main Avenue). This is a must-do for locals to learn where actual notorious Wild West events happened (as opposed to the lore) to share with your guests. Old West Cowboy Music Show and Chuckwagon Supper. Durango's favorite family entertainment since 1969. Bar D Wranglers perform in concert after supper with music and songs of old west cowboys, comedy, and lively instrumentals. This is a must-do for locals to learn where actual notorious Wild West events happened (as opposed to the lore) to share with your guests. Both tourists and locals alike will walk away with a very different view of Durango and a deeper appreciation.   Buffalo soldiers, Native Americans, outlaws, Chinese restaurateurs, railroad works and miners, freed slaves, and "soiled doves" were amongst the melting pot that was Durango. Sometimes things went awry and all hell broke loose. As a result, you will visit the hanging sites and location of the epic gunfight between the Sheriff and the Marshall amongst others.    This tour meets at the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Depot (479 Main Avenue; gather at the horse sculptures out front). Please note this is a one-way walk up Main Avenue. We will end at Maria's Bookstore (960 Main Avenue). On this approximately 1 hour and 15 minute tour we will not enter establishments. This makes it an option for those with disabilities (be prepared for uneven Durango sidewalks however) and well behaved dogs (please give advance notice). After the tour you will be right on time for lunch at any of our wonderful downtown restaurants; now with a newfound appreciation of Durango.    Please do not attend a tour if you are experiencing Covid symptoms.

Downtown Durango is saturated with paranormal activity. You don’t need to walk far to get your fill of ghost stories. Main Avenue was once home to a plethora of saloons, dance halls, brothels, and gambling halls. It was the stomping ground for outlaws, gamblers, prostitutes, miners, and railroad workers. Late night escapades, fueled by whiskey, led to many tragic events resulting in the ghosts that wander the streets today.   Our 90-minute Hauntings & History Ghost Tour will not disappoint. We will meet in front of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Train Depot (479 Main Ave) at dusk. Midway through the tour we will enter one of the best haunted locations that Downtown Durango has to offer! We are the only ghost tour that takes people INSIDE of a location! Wherever we tread on Main Avenue you will hear tales of apparitions who refuse to leave the places they inhabited in life. Because of the tight sidewalks downtown our tours do not exceed 15 people.    Be prepared for loud streets and crowds. Downtown Durango can be pretty raucous at night.

He's a singer/songwriter, loop cover artist. Andrew is also the frontman for the local Americana rock group, the Middlemen.   All Concerts are FREE!
