Looking Glass Art Show

Exhibit run: December 5, 2019—January 30, 2020   The public is invited to the opening reception for the Looking Glass Collective’s winter art show at the Smiley Café Gallery, Thursday, December 5, 2019 from 5 to 7 PM. Meet the artists and see their work in oil, pastel and watercolor. All paintings are for sale with 30% of sales going to Durango’s Local First’s efforts to establish a Creative District in Durango. Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served. The show continues through January 30, 2020. The Looking Glass Collective consists of twenty artists who meet monthly to critique one another’s work. The collective also creates opportunities for exhibits such as the yearly show at Smiley, exhibits for non-profits like San Juan Citizens Alliance and shows at local businesses. The artists have all been juried into multiple national shows; many have won awards. Looking Glass Collective artists participating in this year’s show are: Linda Bonds, Emma French, Sue Giddings, Sandra Heller, Yvonne Holland, Rosemary Juskevich, Rebecca Koeppen, Betsy Krill, Annette LeMaire, Juanita Nelson, Cheryl Roberts, Pat Smiley, Ann Stringfellow, Dinah Swan and Lorraine Trenholm.

Instructor Instructor Denise Lane began learning Tai Chi in the 1980&aposs and teaching in 1994. Her focus is on helping students improve and sustain health, balance, and centering through Tai Chi, meditation and Qigong. Her practice of Tai Chi has given her a foundation for maintaining balance, health, and grounding and even restore her own health. She is a former International forms Champion and Grand champion; four-time Women’s National lightweight Push Hands Champion; and a USA Team member and gold medalist in the 1st and 2nd Pan American Wu-Shu/Kung-Fu Games. While she learned much from the discipline required for performing and competition, her passion is in helping others live a healthy, balanced life. These purposeful handbags are donated to our local nonprofit recipient, Housing Solutions for the Southwest, adding value to their mission.

As the first album since their 2016 release Mercury Switch, this highly anticipated new release is a series of epic live improvised studio jams broken into multiple parts but intended for continuous play. Click HERE to listen to the new album.    The band’s evolution through three drummers has now brought The New Deal closer to its original direction. “With Davide, it’s a bit like ‘coming back home’, as he was the drummer that inspired our original direction back in 1998 when the three of us played an impromptu gig together in Guelph, Ontario. Each of the band’s drummers has brought something unique to The New Deal, and with Davide we’re reaching back to move forward with the organic-infused improvisation that has long-inspired a big part of The New Deal sound,” explains keyboardist Jamie Shields.   The New Deal first began in Toronto in 1999, quickly gaining support from Toronto’s underground club scene as pioneers in electronica, recreating the DJ experience with live, improvised music. Soon the band brought their interpretation of Electro House, Trance, Breakbeat and Drum & Bass to the US where they were embraced by the crowds at NYC’s Wetlands Preserve and cultivated a loyal following in the American jam scene.
