Yang Style Tai Chi

Originating in ancient China, tai chi is an effective exercise for health of the mind and body. Although an art with great depth of knowledge and skill, it can be easy to learn and its health benefits can soon be realized. For many, it continues as a life long journey.   Yang Style is one of the five main styles of Tai Chi and the most well known in the U.S.. In this class we will introduce and practice the basic principles that make Tai Chi so unique and beneficial. We will learn the movements of the 24 short form. This practice has been known to help improve balance, strength, coordination and flexibility.    Denise Lane is a certified Tai Chi instructor. She has been practicing Tai Chi for many years and teaching it since the late 1990's.
The Art of Painting

Express yourself through painting and develop your artistic style in this inspiring class!   Come and join Durango Arts Center each week when a variety of Painting Artists will teach special techniques through different painting mediums!   Be exposed to a variety of tips, tricks and techniques used in creating masterpieces in watercolor, acrylic, oil paints, and pastels, while working with an experienced teacher to give you guidance along the way.   Beginners are welcome! This class is also perfect for students with previous painting experience or have taken this class before. 10 Classes, all supplies are included!

McDonald's Twilight Night Race
5:00pm / Purgatory Base Area
McDonald's Twilight Night is not your typical Wednesday night out. Set at the base of Purgatory, this short track race is for Nordic skiers, fat bikers, and snowshoers to battle it out in the dark, up and down punishing terrain and around quick turns.   This event will consist of three separate races. Skate skiers, fat bikers, and snowshoers will start together and follow courses laid out for each discipline. For each discipline, the course will be somewhat different but equally punishing. The courses are 3 km - 5 km and will take racers 20-30 minutes to complete.    Prizes will be awarded to the winners in the categories of individual male and female in the Youth (U18) and Adult, and Youth (U18) for each discipline.    The entry fee is $5/participant for one race.    5 PM: Registration & bib pick-up  6 PM: Races start   Sponsored by McDonald's, Purgatory, Durango Running Company, Pedal the Peaks Durango, and the Durango Nordic Ski Club.

2023 'Happenings' Calendar Release Party

Bear Smart Durango invites the general public to a gathering celebrating the release of their 2023 "Happenings" calendar. This event takes place at the office of San Juan Citizens Alliance. Complimentary wine will be provided, courtesy of Star Liquors.   Anne-marie will give a slideshow talk on her wildlife photography at 6 p.m. The calendar will be available for purchase at this event. Calendars may be purchased on our website, and at Maria's Bookshop, and Backcountry Experience.   The 2023 calendar features the photography of Anne-marie Ferretti Mee and is intended to provide the approximate timing of happenings in nature in the greater Durango area. Some examples included in the calendar are seasonal wildlife habitat closures, when deer shed their antlers and yearling black bears leave their moms, peak elk road crossing season, and hunting dates so residents know to wear blaze orange while recreating.
